How to Install Label and Ribbon Roll (Zebra ZD421)

This guide shows you how to properly install the label roll and film ink roll on the Zebra ZD421 printer. If you’re using a non-Zebra film roll, you’ll need to insert the orange plastic adapter into the roll. For Zebra-branded rolls, the steps are the same, but the adapter is not required.
Printer Model & Key Specifications:
- Make: Zebra Technologies
- Model: ZD421 Thermal Transfer (part of ZD400 Series)
- Print Method: Thermal Transfer
- Maximum Print Width: 4.09 in (104 mm) at 203 dpi
- Resolution: 203 dpi (8 dots/mm) standard; optional 300 dpi available
- Maximum Print Speed: Up to 6 in/sec (152 mm/sec) at 203 dpi (4 in/sec at 300 dpi)
- Standard Connectivity: USB 2.0 & USB Host
- Optional Connectivity: Ethernet, Serial, 802.11ac Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth 4.1 / BLE
Steps:
Label Roll Installation
• Open the printer by lifting both yellow latches.
• Insert the label roll and pull the label through the guides.
• Adjust the yellow holders to lock the label roll in place.
• Ensure the labels are coming out from the bottom and feeding forward.
Film Ink Roll Installation (Non-Zebra Roll)
• Insert the orange adapters into both ends of the film roll.
• Place the film roll with adapters into the back (supply) spindle.
• Insert the take-up roll into the front spindle.
• Pull the film over the printhead path and stick it onto the take-up roll.
• Turn the take-up roll to tighten the film.
For Zebra Brand Film Roll
• Use the same steps, but do not insert the orange adapters. Zebra rolls are ready to load without them.
